Karl Wetzel Award
A special award named for the late Karl Wetzel was awarded to Mr. Francis Duckworth of Dittmer, MO.
The Karl Wetzel Award is the most notable award given out by the Missouri Libertarian Party.
Karl Wetzel was a Libertarian Party activist, candidate and state treasurer who suffered a massive heart attack in 2000, leaving no heirs. His $50k life insurance proceeds were split between the National Libertarian Party and State Libertarian Party, while his $17k 401(k) with no beneficiary listed went to the state.
This award recognizes Francis Duckworth's lifetime achievement over the last two decades for the Missouri Libertarian Party as Jefferson County LP Chair, as a member of various Libertarian Party Committee's and his hard work on the campaign trail for our candidates. Especially the 1994 Libertarian US Senate campaign for Bill Johnson who received over 4.5% of the vote.
According to Maryanne Gassman who first met Francis in 1992, "There wouldn't be a Jeffco LP but for Francis. He knows the nuts and bolts of politics. He knows the poltics." She admired your courage. "Being a local businessman, he had something at stake standing apart from the crowd out as a Libertarian." She was clear that you haven't spent your time talking to the choir. Not only did he go out on a limb, he climbed the cliff for libertarianism. She remembered that Francis and his son hung a sign out on a cliff face overlooking Highway 30.
Your annual contributions helps fund the day to day operations of the Missouri Libertarian Party.
