The Missouri Libertarian Party Passes Resolution on Ballot Initiative - Opposes Constitutional Amendment 2

On July 30th, the Missouri Libertarian Party passed a resolution on Constitutional Amendment 2 and issued the following statement:

Whereas the Libertarian Party platform plank on Education states: "Education is best provided by the free market, achieving greater quality, accountability and efficiency with more diversity of choice. Recognizing that the education of children is a parental responsibility, we would restore authority to parents to determine the education of their children, without interference from government. Parents should have control of and responsibility for all funds expended for their children's education."

And whereas the Missouri Libertarian Party platform plank on Education states: "Restore local control of all schools. Remove restrictions on home schooling. Move toward privatization of government public schools. Repeal all Federal and State education mandates."

And whereas public schools are a constant battleground wherein special interest groups from both left and right try to impose their agenda on students while taxpayers foot the bill.

Therefore let it be resolved that the Missouri Libertarian Party encourages parents who are concerned about their child's education to remove their children from the ideological battleground of government public schools and seek out educational alternatives such as private schools, home schooling and unschooling.

And let it be further resolved that the Missouri Libertarian Party opposes the Missouri Public Prayer Amendment, Constitutional Amendment 2, on the August 7th, 2012 Primary Ballot.

This is yet another example of a political question that really has no Libertarian answer, stated Missouri LP chair, Dr. Cisse Spragins. Libertarians are certainly in favor of the Bill of Rights and would be delighted if all Americans would insist that politicians and bureaucrats respect our natural rights. We further support the right of any person to pray when and where they desire. However, this ballot question is just another symptom of the problem of government involvement in affairs that are outside the defined role of protecting our freedoms. And unfortunately, with government encroaching on every aspect of our lives, we see constant ideological warfare wherein the majority is trying to impose their will on the minority, rather than allowing peaceful people to live in the manner that they choose.

The Missouri Libertarian Party is the state's 3rd largest political party maintaining continuous ballot access since 1992. Voters who are fed up with the false choices offered by the two older parties, and who would like to see common sense solutions implemented to solve the problems created by big government will find common ground with the Libertarian Party.
